African Angels’ School Volunteer Project Background
‘African Angels’ is a non-profit organisation based in Chintsa, on the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The charity runs an independent school; a high quality primary education facility for some of the region’s poorest children.
‘African Angels’ believes that the most effective way to drive positive change in South Africa, is to ensure children receive a good quality and continuous education starting in pre-school.
Our own aim is to provide ‘African Angels’ with volunteer support in order to enhance and support the teachers who are providing vital opportunities for disadvantaged rural children.

Project Details – Your role as a teaching volunteer
olunteers will have the opportunity to work closely with the pre-school children in a professional classroom environment.
Volunteer tasks include:
- Assisting teachers in delivering lessons
- Preparing lesson materials and resource development
- Creating and running activities in art, song, dance and structured play
- Helping the children during meals and nap times

Orientation is designed to provide a fun and insightful experience to life in South Africa, prior to commencement of the volunteer placement.

- Project overview
- Teaching methodology and lesson preparation
- Visit to the schools for practical introduction
We have two volunteer lodgings in the quaint seaside village of Chintsa East. Volunteers will be staying in shared accommodation (two or three to a room) in a lovely house overlooking the beach and lagoon.
Facilities at the volunteer house include:
- A communal kitchen and living area
- Electricity and hot and cold running water
- Bath and shower room facilities
- All bedding and linen included
- Washing machine available for volunteer use
Meals
Volunteers are provided all meals whilst working on the project.
Breakfast is self-service and includes fresh fruit, toast and jams, cereals, tea and coffee.
Food for a packed lunch to take to the project is provided. Volunteers are responsible for their own lunch and they typically pack this up at breakfast where all the necessary ingredients are available. White, brown and whole-wheat bread, cheese, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, jams, peanut butter and cold meats are all provided for sandwiches as well as fruit.
Dinners are satisfying home-cooked meals. Volunteers also have the opportunity to enjoy traditional Xhosa foods at our Xhosa dinner party. Other themed dinners include a Mexican evening as well as a weekly South African “braai” (BBQ). Vegetarians are catered for.
The volunteer house is situated right on the beach and volunteers have access to canoes, boogie boards and other beach accessories. In the area, there are several small restaurants and bars. Friday night is “fun night out” and all volunteers from the surrounding projects usually meet up.
A local tour operator runs surf schools, beach horse rides, game drives and quad biking which are all bookable at a reduced rate for volunteers.
Local backpackers lodge ‘Buccaneers’ has it’s own bar (a great place to meet like-minded travellers!). The lodge welcomes volunteers to use their swimming pool and take part in free activities in the afternoon.
